Where is the 2022 All-Star game? City, stadium and capacity...
Team LeBron and Team Durant will scrap it out in the NBA All-Star game on Sunday. After being held in Atlanta last year, the event moves to a new city in 2022.
The 71st edition of the NBA All-Star Game takes place this weekend with Team LeBron and Team Durant providing the entertainment for the second year running. LeBron James will be aiming to skipper his side to victory for the fifth year running - his team has won every edition of the All-Star Game since the event’s format was changed from the traditional Eastern Conference versus Western Conference set-up which had been going since 1951.
Cleveland, Ohio
This year’s game will take place at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in downtown Cleveland, Ohio on Sunday 20 February although the All-Star weekend itself will officially tip off on Friday 18th with a celebrity game starring well-known actors, comedians, and athletes from other sports.
It will be just the second time that Cleveland has hosted the All-Star Game. It was last played in Ohio in 1997 - at exactly the same venue, then known as Gund Arena. On that occasion, East beat West 132-120.
'The Q'
The venue opened in 1994 - the first occupants were the Cleveland Cavaliers, who moved there from their Richfield Coliseum base the same year. It was renamed the Quicken Loans Arena in 2005 before gaining its current name, in April 2019. The Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse, or 'The Q’ as it is known locally, was renovated and expanded, undergoing a major, $185 million overhaul the same year to see it’s capacity doubled. A multi-purpose arena, it currently has two long-term tenants - the Cavs and ice hockey team, the Cleveland Monsters. Apart from sports, it also hosts concerts - some of the big-name acts who have graced its stage over the years include Madonna, U2, Lady Gaga and Tina Turner and it is considered one of the top 20 venues in the country for touring artists.
Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse has seating for a 19,432-capacity crowd for basketball games - all fans attending Sunday’s All-Star Game must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 or provide proof of a negative test. Unless actively eating or drinking, all spectators aged two years and upwards are recommended to wear a face mask while inside the venue.
