Bad news for Borussia Dortmund and the United States men’s national team after Gio Reyna suffered another injury on Sunday in the Bundesliga. The USMNT ace returned to the starting XI for the first time since August for Dortmund against Borussia Mönchengladbach in the 6-0 win, but he failed to finish the match.

Reyna left in tears

The 19-year-old was forced to leave in the 28th minute of the match again due to an injury and he was replaced by Julian Brandt. Gio Reyna came off in tears after picking up an apparent leg injury when Dortmund had just scored the opening goal, with Marco Reus finding the back of the net in the 26th minute.

During the replay it was not clear if the USMNT ace tweaked a muscle just before the goal, or in the immediate aftermath. Reyna made his fifth appearance of the Bundesliga season and he has scored twice. It is not known the severity of his injury, but he will have to undergo medical examination to determine how long he will be sidelined.

This new injury comes at a bad time for Reyna because he could be ruled out for the next international break of March. The United States men’s national team will play the last three games of the round-robin tournament to secure a spot in the upcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup and with Dortmund looking to advance to the next round in the Europa League after losing 4-2 in the first leg against Rangers.
