The NFL's 2022 free agent period starts on Monday, March 14 with two days of legal negotiations. The free agency frenzy officially takes off on March 16th, and so does the start of the new season. Several teams will be looking to improve their rosters by signing some of the biggest names on the 2022 open market.

While we've already seen a few extensions and big trades this week, teams cannot sign with the players until the new league year begins. However, agents for free-agent players, in the list we added below, are allowed to negotiate with prospective teams starting at noon on March 14.

NFL teams use early contract extensions and the franchise tag to keep their best young players away from the market. The window within which teams can place the franchise tag on players began on Feb. 22 through March 8, after which these previously-tagged players are required to play the 2022 season under that franchise tag and the salary tied to it.

This week, eight top players received the franchise tag, with two other pending free agents. Chargers receiver Mike Williams and Titans pass rusher Harold Landry III -- signed new contracts.
