Katharine Houghton Hepburn was known for her strong independence and energetic personality. She was a leading actress in Hollywood for over sixty years, recognized for her participation in various genres, from comedy to dramas.

How many Oscars does Katharine Hepburn have?

Hepburn received 12 nominations and won four Oscars in the ‘Best Actress’ category, a record unmatched by any actor or actress to date. Thanks to her achievements, in 1999, she was named by the American Film Institute as the greatest female star in the history of Hollywood.

Her early years in the film industry were marked by success. In 1934, she received her first Oscar for her third film, ‘Morning Glory’. She was subsequently nominated for ‘Alice Adams’ in 1936, ‘The Philadelphia Story’ in 1941, ‘Woman of the Year’ in 1943, ‘The African Queen’ in 1952, ‘Summertime’ in 1956, Suddenly, Last Summer in 1960, and ‘Long Day’s Journey into Night’ in 1963.

Her second Oscar came in 1968, when she won for her performance in ‘Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner’. A year later, she received the ‘Best Actress’ award for ‘The Lion in Winter’. Hepburn received her fourth Academy Award in 1982 for her performance in ‘On Golden Pond’.

Hepburn was recognized for rejecting the Hollywood publicity system and for refusing to comply with society’s expectations of women. Hepburn remained active in the end of her life and retired in 1994 at the age of 87.
