Update:

Hollywood’s biggest night of the year, the Oscars, will be taking place on Sunday, 2 March at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Taking advantage of the spectacle, and journalist in town to cover the event but with nothing to do the night before, another set of golden awards will be handed out, the Golden Raspberries, also known as the Razzies or the anti-Oscars.

Unlike the following night, the Razzie Awards go out to the moves and performances that were the most disappointing of the year. There are nine categories including worst movie, actor, actress, supporting actor, supporting actress, director, screen combo, ‘prequel, remake, rip-off or sequel’ and screenplay.

In 2025, Borderlands, Joker: Folie a Deux, Madame Web, Megalopolis and Reagan are all vying for six Razzie Awards each. Meanwhile, Unfrosted is in the running for four and The Crow is up for two Golden Raspberries.

From a private ceremony in a living room to national broadcast

The first Golden Raspberries, the name comes from “blowing a raspberry,” were handed out in 1981. John JB Wilson held a private ceremony in his living room with a few dozen friends on the night of the Oscars. He came up with the idea after sitting through disappointing double feature of ‘Stop the Music’ and ‘Xanadu’.

The event was a success and made the local papers. Each of the following years saw the number of people attending double. To not compete with the Oscars, the ceremony was moved to the Saturday before, taking advantage of all the journalists in town for the main event but nothing to do. Now the ceremony is broadcast on national television.

Around 1,200 Razzie members email their ballot to select which movie or performance was the worst of the year. Unlike the Oscars, which are decided by members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science who are invited to join, anyone can sign up to be part of the Razzies’ membership. All you need to do is pay an annual $40 fee or a one-time payment of $500 for a lifetime membership.
