Richard Gere is not only an iconic figure of Hollywood cinema, but also a star committed to social, humanitarian, and spiritual causes. Beyond his acting career, the star of hits like Pretty Woman and Chicago has proven to be an active and consistent voice in the defense of human rights, peace, and justice.

And the latest demonstration of these values came in front of Spanish journalist Ana Pastor, with whom he boarded the NGO Open Arms sailboat for an interview on her show, where the Hollywood star applauded the work of this Catalan association that rescues migrants in Mediterranean waters.

“This is something Spain should be very proud of,” the American actor told the journalist. “Open Arms has done something incredible: saving lives on the water. I think they’ve rescued around 70,000 people with this boat.”

Other Causes

Furthermore, the actor also addressed other current global issues, such as the conflict between Israel and Palestine in the Gaza Strip, where he criticized the role of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, accusing him of carrying out genocide against the Palestinian people under the auspices of US President Donald Trump, whom he considers a “spoiled child.” He said of Trump: “He has no emotional intelligence, but he knows how to manipulate people’s fears and insecurities.”

However, this is not the first time he has attacked the American businessman. “This is about the tragedy we are all experiencing in the United States,” the actor said at a press conference in Granada before receiving this year’s International Goya Award from the Spanish Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences for his lifetime achievement. “The worst of all was when he decided to completely dismantle and destroy USAID, which is the wing of the US government. It was created during Ronald Reagan’s time, I believe. And it does good work all over the world. It works in healthcare, education, disaster relief… in all the humanitarian issues we should champion, and above all, in wanting to be a great country, if the United States wants to be a great country,” said the actor, who currently lives in Madrid with his third wife, Alejandra Silva, of Galician origin.

For Gere, this department is key: “Part of that is helping the world be a benefactor to people who are hungry, who are fleeing violence, who are lost and need a home. States in pandemics and all that. This is the environment, what’s happening to the world. So this is a president and his administration who are shying away from all those human responsibilities, and it seems like all he cares about is money,” he added.

During this press conference with journalists in Granada, the actor also took the opportunity to attack the millionaires who surround Donald Trump, whom he defined as “clowns”: “They have their own show in the Washington offices near the president. […] The millionaire clowns who surround Trump are immature and narcissistic, a deadly mix,” he said, in clear reference to Elon Musk, owner of Tesla and X (formerly Twitter).
