The reason why Victoria Beckham doesn’t smile and other revelations for her Netflix documentary

Netflix’s new three-part documentary about Victoria Beckham is pulling back the curtain on the fashion icon — and her famous husband. In one of the most talked-about episodes, the couple open up like never before, revealing some surprisingly relatable bedroom secrets.

David’s snoring keeps Victoria awake

“He’s obviously incredibly handsome, very smart, and very successful. And he’s funny too,” Victoria gushes about David in the documentary. But the praise quickly turns into playful frustration as she drops a bombshell: “The problem is… he snores.”

Fortunately Victoria is able to see the funny side but David’s nightly snoring has gotten so bad, she has resorted to wearing earplugs just to get some sleep. “Let me tell you, I don’t wear earplugs for fun!” she quips.

Other topics that are candidly discussed include how Victoria felt alone and afraid when the Spice Girls separated in 2001 while she was still getting to grips with motherhood, looking after her first child Brooklyn who was barely two years old when the group split.

Other confessions include an eating disorder which she tried to hide from those around her. “I realized I was desperately trying to control the narrative,” she says. “I couldn’t control what was written about me or the photos that were taken. So I guess I tried to control it through fashion.”

Afraid to let her guard down

Of all the Spice Girls, Victoria seems to be the one who felt least comfortable in front of the camera. She rarely smiles in public, and explains her serious look is down to other deep-seated fears about her appearances.

“When I see a camera, I change,” she says. “The barrier goes up, the armor goes on, and that’s when the miserable cow who doesn’t smile comes out.”

Victoria adds that her own sense of her self-image was warped by what was written about her in the media - the constant nasty remarks, which ended up making her so anxious she suffered a self-confidence crisis.

“I’d love to have the confidence to walk out of a restaurant and smile, or walk on a red carpet and smile, but I just can’t do it,” she says in Victoria Beckham.
