Woody Allen made a splash during a recent visit to a busy New York restaurant by saving the life of one of his friends by using the Heimlich maneuver.

The 87-year-old and friend Andrew Stein recently visited the Upper East Side Italian restaurant Caravaggio, however things turned serious when Stein began choking on a piece of pork.

That’s when Allen got up from his seat, as friends Alan Dershowitz and Soon-Yi Previn watched on in horror, as Stein began to struggle to breathe.

Allen applied the Heimlich maneuver with strength and vigor according to eyewitnesses to the relief of everyone, with Stein even able to joke about the matter after.

“I am embarrassed to say it, but Woody actually saved my life,” Stein, who was New York City Council President from 1986 to 1994, told Page Six.

“I normally order fish, but this time I went for the pork, and soon after we started to eat, a piece of the meat became lodged in my throat and I was struggling to breathe.

“I started to panic. I was terrified. And then Woody came to my rescue.

“It really was like a scene from one of his movies. If it wasn’t for his quick thinking, I fear I may have died. I owe him my life.”

Allen saved a life in 1992 as well

This isn’t the first time Allen has sprung into action to save someone’s life.

Back in 1992, he saved former ‘Saturday Night Live’ producer Jean Doumanian when she began choking on a piece of bread at Primola.

The incident made the front page of the New York Post, with Doumanian stating the incident made them lifelong friends. However, they ended up suing each other back in 2002.

Allen sued Doumanian and her financier boyfriend Jacqui Safra for about $14 million, claiming they siphoned millions of dollars from his movie profits for themselves.
