Air conditioning experts agree: If you use it daily, clean your filters every two to four weeks instead of weekly

Your air conditioner is one of the hardest-working systems in your home during hot weather, yet it’s also one of the most neglected. Most people don’t think about it until it stops cooling or starts giving off an unpleasant smell. To avoid those problems, it’s important to clean and maintain it regularly to keep it running efficiently and help prevent costly repairs.

For households that run the air conditioner every day, experts recommend cleaning the filter every two to four weeks. If you only use it occasionally, cleaning it once every one or two months is usually enough. It’s also a good idea to give the system a thorough cleaning before the start of summer to remove dust and debris that built up over the winter.

A simple job you can do yourself

You don’t need to be an expert to keep your air conditioner in good condition. Most routine maintenance can be done at home.

The first step is to turn off the power to the unit. Then open the front panel and carefully remove the filter. Wash it in the sink using warm water, adding a little mild soap if it’s especially dirty. Once it’s clean, let it dry completely before putting it back in place.

You can also wipe down the indoor unit with a slightly damp cloth to remove dust from the air vents, avoiding harsh cleaning products. If you can safely access the outdoor condenser unit, clear away leaves, dirt and other debris so air can circulate freely.

Even though routine maintenance is straightforward, you should contact a qualified HVAC technician if the unit leaks water indoors, starts making unusual noises or stops blowing cold air altogether.

Scheduling a professional inspection at least once a year is the best way to keep your air conditioner running efficiently and avoid unexpected breakdowns during the hottest months of the year.
