Update:

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates revealed the details of a conversation he had during a meeting with US President Donald Trump.

According to Gates, he told Trump that he agreed with his plan to reduce public spending through the creation of the Department of Government Efficiency, as he believes that if the deficit is not reduced, “a financial problem will emerge” in the United States. “Given the figures they have been working with, they will have to analyze everything, including pensions, defense, and healthcare,” the philanthropist noted.

The importance of US public programs

The new agency, led by Elon Musk, should not eliminate all public programs, in Gates’s view. In fact, the Microsoft co-founder believes that certain medication assistance programs should remain because they enable millions of people to live with HIV.

“If they are taken away, not only would people die just as a cure is being developed, but the negative sentiment - particularly in Africa – would be worse than never having helped at all,” Gates told The Wall Street Journal.

Gates emphasized the issue of HIV, which he discussed most with Trump, and asked about the possibility of investing in and developing a cure. “During the COVID era, he accelerated innovation in vaccine development, so I asked whether the same could be done here, and I think we both got quite excited about it.”
