Discover who’s getting $2,000 from Social Security: will you receive a check on Wednesday, Jan. 29?
We bring you the lowdown on the remaining Social Security payment schedule for January 2025.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) is preparing to send out one final batch of payments in January 2025.
However, while the SSA mostly issues checks on Wednesdays, there are no payments on the schedule for January 29. The only SSA payout left this month is due to occur two days later, on Friday, January 31.
Which Americans get Social Security payments?
In the United States, the SSA makes monthly Social Security payments to retired workers, disabled workers and surviving relatives of deceased recipients.
Each month, the agency also sends checks to beneficiaries of its Supplemental Security Income (SSI) package - a scheme that differs from its contribution-based retirement, disability and survivors’ programs.
While the amounts paid to the latter three groups are dependent on how much Social Security tax they, or their deceased family member, have paid, the SSI scheme is needs-based. With just under 7.5 million beneficiaries as of December 2024, it is for Americans with little or no income who are over 65 or have a disability.
Who is getting a Social Security check on Jan. 31?
It is recipients of SSI benefits that can expect a check to arrive on January 31, as they will be getting their February money slightly early. SSI recipients normally receive their benefits on the first of each month, but the payment date is brought forward if that month begins with a weekend day or a holiday.
As February 1 is a Saturday, the SSA has moved the month’s SSI payment date to the closest working day before then, which is Friday, January 31.
When do the next Social Security payments go out in February?
The days on which February payments will go out to beneficiaries of the Social Security retirement, disability or survivors’ programs depend on recipients’ date of birth.
Recipients born between the 1st and the 10th of the month receive their money on the second Wednesday of each month; those born between the 11th and the 20th get their checks on the third Wednesday; and those born between the 21st and the 31st are paid on the fourth Wednesday. This month’s last round of retirement, disability and survivors’ payments was issued on Wednesday, January 22.
February's Wednesday payment dates
- February 12: Recipients born on 1st to 10th
- February 19: Recipients born on 11th to 20th
- February 26: Recipients born on 21st to 31st
The above timeline doesn’t apply to retired workers, disabled workers and survivors who began getting their money before May 1997; they will be paid on Monday, February 3, regardless of the day on which they were born.
How much do Social Security recipients get?
Retirement beneficiaries represent the overwhelming majority of the US’s Social Security recipients. As of December 2024, they accounted for just over 54 million of the nearly 76 million Americans who are part of one of the four programs outlined in this article.
According to the SSA, retired workers generally get around $2,000 per month: following the 2025 cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), the average individual retirement payment now stands at $1,976. Disabled workers are paid $1,580 per month on average, and Social Security recipients on survivor benefits get an average of $1,832.
In the SSI scheme, the COLA for 2025 has led to a top monthly payment of $967 per eligible individual.
