Since implementing the world’s strictest data protection laws, the European Union has its sights set on some of the biggest tech companies in the world. In May, the EU announced that it would be fining Meta over a billion dollars for failing to protect user data. And this week, after a group of researchers found that Instagram, which is owned by Meta, was showing inappropriate content containing minors, the EU is prepared to levy additional sanctions against the company.

Instagram flagged for trafficking child abuse material

The internet has enabled the sharing of vast amounts of data, allowing for the dissemination of culture in all its forms. Videos and photographs are particularly popular for sharing, and social networks are a prime example of this trend. Unfortunately, not all users have good intentions, as there are those who seek to exploit the vulnerable.

TechCrunch reported that the EU is warning Meta that serious sanctions could be coming if the company Instagram child abuse material is shared. These threats come after the Wall Street Journal, in partnership with researchers at Stanford University and the University of Massachusetts found that pedophiles were exploring weaknesses in the Instagram content moderation system to create networks to share child pornography. In short, it is the famous algorithm that connects the accounts through the hashtags used by both pedophiles and accounts that have sensitive content for minors.

Europe willing to investigate and sanction Meta

For parents, it can be concerning to see certain the content Meta chooses to serve its youngest users, and it is therefore critical, that adults provide guidance as children learn to navigate social media. This can help children understand how to avoid potential issues with other accounts that could lead to abuse.

The issue at hand is not solely due to a lack of parental education on internet safety. The risks are widespread, and in this particular situation, Meta holds significant responsibility. According to European Commissioner Thierry Brenton, “It is evident that Meta’s measures to safeguard minors are ineffective. Mark Zuckerberg must address this matter and take prompt action.”

It is not without reason that urgent action is needed to ensure the safety of Instagram and its other platforms. The widespread sharing of photographs that violate minors is a serious concern and must be prevented to avoid any future problems. It is crucial to prioritize the safety of everyone, especially the youngest users.
