Goodbye to DOGE? This is when Elon Musk will stop working in the department
Elon Musk’s time in government is set to come to and end soon. Here’s when.

Elon Musk, the unelected South African car company owner in charge of cutting public services for hard-working American citizens, is set to be relieved of his duties as head of the Department of Government Efficiency.
Since its inception, DOGE has characterised federal spending, money given to public projects and institutions such as universities, climate change initiatives, scientific research, Social Security, DEO programs and USAID, as "waste, fraud, and abuse". And at the head of the government department, although not quite officially - despite being the public face of the organisation for the entirety of its existence and, until recently, photographed in the media more than the actual Vice President himself - is Elon Musk. He will soon step away from the role.
After being kick-started by his Sough African emerald-mine owner father, Musk made his fortune working as the CEO of the electric car company Tesla and eventually became the world’s richest man.
An early voice in support of climate change and DEI rights, Musk has completely switched his tune - and his cap - in favour of political power, paying almost $300 million to Donald Trump in his election campaign and buying Twitter, turning what was a more-or-less benign social media site into a Nazi-propagandists’ soap bath.
We are trying to accelerate sustainable energy, so what matters is how much someone can contribute to that goal.

Musk set to allocate ‘far more time’ to Tesla
But now he’s losing his job in government. DOGE has slashed tens of thousands of dollars when it comes to public services, despite the website probably telling you it’s saved billions - and now his workload is set to drop significantly, according to the man himself.
Speaking on a conference call to Tesla, whose earnings, popularity have tanked, along with a drop in shares of 41% this year, Musk reportedly said that “starting probably in next month, in May, my time allocation to DOGE will drop significantly" and that he will be “allocating far more of my time to Tesla”.
DOGE, however, will continue to operate - we just don’t know how things will work out yet.
Despite his working week in government being whittled down, it’s unlikely to turn people back on his side. As reported by CBS, Adam Crisafulli of Vital Knowledge said that “Musk’s personal brand has been permanently tarnished by his political activities in the last several months, and exiting DOGE won’t change that. On top of all this, the stock remains very expensive.”
While Musk was Trump’s Robin to his Batman in his first days as President, with the two seemingly inseparable from one another, his presence at the side of the man in charge of the free world has also wained, with Vice President JD Vance stepping in as Trump’s number 2 on stage.

It is curious to note that Trump’s tariffs have caused concern for a lot of international companies who will be affected heavily by the price hikes, with Tesla likely to be hit hard given their standing on the global stage. They make two models in China, a country with tariffs of over 100%, and the company was forced earlier this month to stop taking orders from US customers for both its Model S and Model X vehicles.
