After starting journalism studies in the seventies, his career in the world of acting began on stage, although he soon moved to the small screen with television productions. The most notable was the series ‘St. Elsewhere’, in which he played the role of Dr. Philip Chandler for six seasons.

Washington’s success continued in the nineties, a decade in which he gained the respect and acclaim of critics. His portrayal of Malcolm X in the eponymous film earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. He later starred alongside Tom Hanks in ‘Philadelphia’ in 1993.

His career continued with hits such as ‘The Pelican Brief’, ‘The Preacher’s Wife’, ‘Fallen’, ‘The Bone Collector’, and ‘Hurricane’, for which he received another Oscar nomination. In 2001, he played Sergeant Alonzo Harris in ‘Training Day’. This time, Washington won another Academy Award, this time for Best Actor.

Since then, Washington has continued to make a multitude of films, including ‘John Q’, ‘American Gangster’, ‘The Book of Eli’, ‘2 Guns’, ‘Flight’, ‘The Equalizer’, ‘The Magnificent Seven’, ‘Roman J.
