Gladiator is an epic action film of the peplum genre released in the year 2000, directed by Ridley Scott and starring Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, and Connie Nielsen.

Crowe plays the role of Maximus Decimus Meridius, a Hispano-Roman general who is loyal to Emperor Marcus Aurelius. However, he is betrayed by Commodus, who killed his father, the Emperor, to seize the throne. Maximus is then forced into slavery but triumphs as a gladiator on his path to avenge the death of his family.

Gladiator was a critical and commercial success, becoming one of the highest-grossing films of 2000, grossing $34.83 million in its opening weekend in the US and over $457 million worldwide that year.

The movie was nominated for several awards across 36 different ceremonies. Out of a total of 119 nominations, the movie won 48 awards, including some Academy Awards in its 73rd edition.
