Living in the United States can be a real financial challenge—especially when it comes to filling the shopping basket. Prices are generally higher than in other countries, such as Spain, which makes everyday life noticeably more expensive.

In this context, Carol Brown, a U.S.-based content creator, shared a TikTok video in which she talks about her supermarket haul to prepare Spanish dishes. “We just did the shopping to make Spanish food for some friends who are coming over for lunch tomorrow, and I’m going to show you how much we spent,” she begins.

The TikToker goes on to explain that she’ll be cooking wrinkled potatoes, pepper salad, gazpacho, seafood stew, and chicken in pepitoria sauce. “By the way, all the prices I mention have to include a 7% tax,” she adds. Carol then starts listing the prices: 18 eggs for $15.99, four packs of small potatoes at $4.99 each, a jar of mayonnaise for $8.63, and a bottle of cooking wine for $4.99, among others.

Fruits, vegetables, canned goods, nuts, pasta, sliced bread, grated cheese—Carol breaks down her entire grocery haul until she finally reveals the total: “Everything you’ve just seen came to $211.13. What do you think?” she concludes.

In just a few weeks, the video has racked up over 100,000 views, nearly 3,000 likes, and around 1,500 comments. It has sparked plenty of reactions from viewers surprised by the high prices in American supermarkets.
