Social Security: Where does your check rank in 2026 depending on your age?

There are several factors that determine how big your Social Security check will be at retirement. Here’s a breakdown of what the current amounts look like.

How your Social Security ranks in 2026

One in five Americans age 70 are still plodding away at a nine-to-five gig but many prefer to retire earlier. The soonest you can begin to claim Social Security retirement benefits is age 62, however, you’ll be leaving a lot of money on the table, 30% if your full retirement age is 67.

Those that wait until they are 70 are rewarded handsomely by the Social Security Administration, getting an 8% boost to their benefits for each year beyond full retirement age.

But the age at which you begin claiming your SSA retirement benefit is just one of the factors that the agency uses to calculate how much you will receive. The SSA also takes into account your earnings history so the amounts each recipient gets varies widely. He’s a look at how your Social Security benefit ranks.

How your Social Security ranks in 2026

The SSA announced at the beginning of the year that the average Social Security retirement benefit in 2026 is $2,071. However, according to Geoffrey Schmidt, a certified public accountant and host of the Holy Schmidt! Podcast, “it’s just a number.”

As mentioned before, how much each person receives depends on the age at which they begin claiming benefits and their earnings history. Based on SSA data, below is the payment distribution for all Social Security beneficiaries:

Bottom 10%$900

Median (50th)$1,900
Top 25%$2,500
Top 10%$3,200
Top 5%$3,200
Top 1%$4,700

Looking at SSA’s data these are the average amounts that each age group receives compared to the maximum amount that is possible.
