Stimulus checks and tax rebates in October 2023: which states pay them and amounts

Find out which states are still sending stimulus checks and tax refunds to their residents. Which ones will issue payments in October and how much?

States delivering checks and refunds in October

Last year,several states across the nation approved the sending of stimulus checks or tax rebates due to high levels of inflation.

Inflation has fallen considerably since 2022 and fewer and fewer states are sending the monetary boosts to their residents. However, some places continue to send aid or rebates. Find out which ones are sending money in October and how much.

Alaska

The state is preparing to send the 2023 permanent fund dividend (PFD) which will be $1,312 this year. The first disbursement is for applications that submitted their claim electronically. If payment was requested via direct deposit and they are determined to be eligible by Friday, September 22, the money will be sent on Thursday, October 5.

The second disbursement includes all applications submitted (electronically or on paper). Payments to applicants determined to be eligible for payment by October 18, 2023 will be distributed on Thursday, October 26.

After that, as applications are determined to be eligible for payment, the division will continue to distribute dividends each month.

Colorado

The state offers a property tax rebate, rent and heating credit (PTC) worth up to $1,044. Those who qualify must show proof that their income does not exceed $16,925 if they file a return as a single filer or $22,858 if filing jointly.

Applications must have been processed by September 10 in order to begin receiving your payment on October 5 or 15.

Massachusetts

Taxpayers can receive a rebate of approximately 14% of their state tax liability. Who is eligible? Anyone who paid personal income taxes in Massachusetts for the 2021 tax year and filed a 2021 state tax return on or before September 15, 2023.

Payments are sent approximately one month after filing your tax return. So if you filed in September, you will receive your payment in October. More details here.

Montana

The state continues to send individual income tax refunds, which provide individual taxpayers with $1,250 or the amount on line 20 on Form 2, whichever is less. Married couples filing jointly receive $2,500 or the amount on line 20, whichever is less. Returns began in July and will continue until December.

On the other hand, Montana residents could qualify for a 2022 property tax rebate of up to $675 per year of property taxes paid on a primary residence.

Taxpayers had until October 2, 2023 to claim it. Rebates are sent as claims are processed, so you could receive your money this month if you filed a claim online last month. More details here.

New Mexico

State residents are eligible for a rebate of $500 for single filers and $1,000 for joint filers who file a 2021 personal income tax (PIT) return.

According to the rebate web portal, checks and direct deposits were mailed in June. However, eligible residents have until May 31, 2024 to file the 2021 PIT return to receive their rebate. Virginia

Virginia resident taxpayers may be eligible to receive a tax rebate of up to $200 for individuals and up to $400 for couples filing a joint tax return.

According to the Virginia Department of Revenue, you must file your taxes by November 1 to be eligible for this rebate. More details here.

Washington

Washington state residents have until December to apply for the Working Families Tax Credit (WFTC), which offers payments between $50 and $1,200.

Other checks

Alabama

Tax rebate checks begin shipping next month to Alabama residents who successfully filed their 2022 tax returns. The amount is up to $300 for taxpayers who filed a joint return and $150 for single taxpayers.
