We take a look at the 10 most affordable cities in the US in 2023 and what makes them more affordable than the rest.

10. Buffalo

Although the snowstorms during winters in Buffalo can be harsh, the people and scenery make it a nice place to live in. The cost of living in Buffalo - the second-largest city in the state of New York - is 27% lower than the state average and 5% lower than the national average.

9. Akron

We move on to LeBron James country. Akron is one of the most affordable places to live in Ohio. Apart from LeBron it also has an association with the breakfast cereal industry. The cost of living in Akron is 14% lower than the national average.

8. Evansville

Evansville, in the state of Indiana, is situated along the Ohio River and is the third-largest city in the state. The city has a strong industrial presence, with companies including Toyota employing local workers. You can find apartments to rent in Evansville between $780 and $1,719.

Toledo is included in the top five. The “Glass City” offers beaches, lake-side parks, and a local feel due to its size. The cost of living here can be affordable if you’re looking for a cheaper place to live.

4. South Bend

South Bend is home to the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. The cost of living in South Bend is 4% lower than the state average and 14% lower than the national average. The city is located just south of Indiana’s border with Michigan.

We go south next, to Wichita Falls in Texas. Wichita Falls falls into the top three most affordable cities to live in. The average rent for apartments in 2023 is between $677 and $900.

Remember Orville and Wilbur Wright? The Wright brothers designed and tested the first powered aircraft and were from Dayton. This place has a history involving aviation, and the aerospace sector, which contributes to the economy. The cost of living in Dayton is 5% higher than the state average but 6% lower than the national average.

Brownsville is the most affordable city to live in in the US. In the state of Texas, housing here is 30% cheaper than the country’s average, and utilities are around 20% cheaper for locals. The cost of living in Brownsville is 8% lower than the state average and 15% lower than the national average.
