Update:

Household appliances take up a lot of energy in the home and contribute hugely to our electricity bills every month. In times of pocket-pinching savings - thanks Donald - it’s important to know which appliances are our friends in terms of consumption, and which ones aren’t.

While our always-on friend the fridge is easily the biggest occupant in most of our kitchens, it’s nowhere near the biggest consumer of power in our house.

That title goes to the electric oven, which is easily the hungriest of our kitchen appliances when it comes to electricity.

A baker’s favourite, our trusty electric oven can consume between 2,000 and 5,000 watts per hour, which ends up being around 40 to 90 kilowatt-hours a month with regular use. To put that into perspective, your fridge eats up much less: only around 300 and 800 watts per hour.

The reason behind such a huge disparity is simple: your oven needs to turn air from room temperature to over 300ºF, something that takes up a lot of energy. On the other hand, a stable-temperatured fridge doesn’t use up a lot of energy as it doesn’t have to do a lot.

One easy way of saving energy with your oven is to cook several dishes at once, instead of turning it on then off every time. As well as that, keeping the oven door open and not letting the heat out - forcing your oven to reheat itself - is something to keep in mind.

However, tudogostoso goes even further, providing the key to keeping the consumption down: always unplug the oven when you’re done using it, especially with “models that continue to consume energy in standby mode”. So now you know, there’s the best way to save on your electricity bills and help the environment along the way.
