Topeka, the capital of Kansas, is offering up to $15,000 in incentives for people to move there and boost the local economy.

The delivery of incentives is given through a refund, which is possible thanks to the ‘Choose Topeka’ program. This program is available to anyone with the right to work in the US, has a job offer from a participating employer, and has rented or purchased a house in the area. If a person qualifies, there are additional requirements that quickly change once enrolled in the program. ‘Choose Topeka’ is not an option for undocumented immigrants, and city officials have emphasized that Topeka is not a sanctuary city.

What are the requirements to participate in the program?

To be eligible for the Choose Topeka program, you must have a job offer from an employer that is a member. You cannot be a resident of Topeka, and if you accept the job, you will be required to move to the city. Only those with a job offer with an annual salary of $50,000 or more can apply. If these three requirements are met, one must also:

  • Buy or rent a home, for your primary residence, in Shawnee County
  • Be eligible to work in the United States
  • Complete the Choose Topeka survey one year later
  • Submit the application before relocating permanently

If you are eligible, you can get up to $10,000 in funds to cover your rent for the first year or up to $15,000 if you purchased a home. The program is funded by Go Topeka and the Joint Economic Development Organization, which together match fifty percent of that offered by the participating employer. According to the program’s website, the employer can offer anywhere between $2,500 and $15,000 for the employee transfer.
