Update:

If you’re a coffee drinker, you have probably gone through the dilemma of where to throw out the old coffee grounds. Well, it turns out that used coffee grounds are actually surprisingly effective as lawn care. Plus, they’re eco-friendly.

Why coffee grounds are good for your yard

Next time you make coffee and need to throw out the old grounds, scatter them on your lawn. Used coffee grounds act as a natural, slow-release fertilizer. They are particularly rich in nitrogen, which is essential for healthy grass to grow. They contain small amounts of phosphorus, potassium, and beneficial micronutrients like calcium and magnesium. And perhaps best of all, coffee grounds improve the structure of the soil as well as drainage and moisture retention, boosting the long-term health of your lawn.

It’s important to note that coffee grounds shouldn’t be used as a primary fertilizer. Rather, they should be used as a nutrient booster as they work best when combined with other organic materials like compost, grass clippings, or wood chips.

It’s important that you’re using used coffee grounds - not fresh - as fresh coffee can alter the pH of the soil in harmful ways. Make sure to let them dry out first to avoid mold or crust. For mulch, combine the grounds with wood chips or needles and apply in thin layers or mixed directly into the soil to avoid issues with pets. Make sure not to overdo it as too much can be harmful.

It may take some time to collect enough grounds to cover your whole lawn, but you can also collect them from coffee shops, as some will give them away for free. But if used properly and in moderation, used coffee grounds offer a more sustainable way to enrich your lawn compared to synthetic fertilizers.
