One reason is that the charger continues drawing power from the electrical outlet. Its internal electronic components remain energized, which can gradually shorten the charger’s lifespan. It also continues to consume a small amount of electricity. The amount used by a single charger is almost negligible, but if several chargers remain plugged in throughout the house, the total energy use can add up.

The risks of leaving a charger plugged in

There are other potential risks as well. One of the biggest is exposure to power surges. During thunderstorms or electrical grid problems, a sudden surge in voltage can damage the charger. Even built-in protection systems can’t always prevent damage.

Extra caution is recommended if you’re using a cheap or uncertified charger. These models tend to be less reliable and are more likely to overheat, short-circuit or develop other electrical faults.

It’s also important to inspect your charger and cable regularly. If the charger becomes unusually hot, has cracks or other visible damage, gives off a strange smell, or the cable is frayed, it’s time to replace it.

Experts recommend choosing original or certified chargers that meet recognized safety standards and have passed the necessary testing.

If you won’t be using a charger for an extended period, unplugging it is a good habit. Doing so reduces wear on its electronic components, lowers the chance of damage and can help extend the life of the charger.
