Update:

Speaking to CNN’s Anderson Cooper from Capitol Hill, Democratic Congressman Seth Moulton of Massachusetts delivered a scathing rebuke of President Donald Trump’s latest remarks suggesting he may not uphold the U.S. Constitution.

Trump OR the U.S. Constitution

“You don’t reconcile that,” Moulton said, responding to Trump’s assertion that he will defer to his lawyers and obey the Supreme Court when pressed on constitutional obligations. “Trump has never agreed to follow the Constitution. You as an American voter can support Donald Trump, but you can’t support Donald Trump and the Constitution. He forgot his oath the minute he took it.”

Trump ignoring his oath

Moulton, a former U.S. Marine, tied the president’s actions to a broader breach of national values.

“It’s the same oath, by the way, that I took as a United States Marine and that every veteran has taken – to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. Imagine if you went up to an Army private and said, ‘Do you actually intend to uphold your oath?’ and he said, ‘I don’t know.’

“Or you asked a police officer on the street, ‘Are you going to uphold the law?’ and he said, ‘I don’t know.’ That’s what the President of the United States is telling everyone in the world today.”

The criticism comes just a couple of months after Moulton denounced Trump’s controversial decision to pardon more than 1,500 individuals involved in the January 6th Capitol riot. In a January 21 press release, Moulton wrote:

“The Founding Fathers warned us against leaders like Donald Trump, and they were right. Trump’s decision to pardon 1,500 January 6th criminals – among them white supremacists and violent militia leaders – will go down in history as one of the most anti-democratic and un-American political ploys by any American president.

“No one is above the law – it’s that simple - but especially those who assault police officers," he continued. “Attempting to stop a democratic transfer of power by force goes against the very Constitution that Trump just took an oath to protect and defend.”
