Known dev slams GTA 6: “Delay it forever, it’s bad for the industry”

Brandon Sheffield, director of Hyper Gunsports, believes Rockstar’s blockbuster will only hurt the gaming ecosystem.

As hype continues to build for Grand Theft Auto VI, not everyone is thrilled about Rockstar’s next major release. Indie game developer Brandon Sheffield, known for titles like Hyper Gunsports and Oh Deer!, has publicly criticized the upcoming blockbuster, arguing that its arrival won’t help the industry—but rather harm it.

Sheffield shared his thoughts in a string of posts on Bluesky, calling the 2026 release of GTA 6 a potential blow to the diversity and visibility of other games.

“I think GTA’s delay is good for almost everyone making games,” he wrote. “No one has to compete with them for attention in 2025. People act like money flowing ‘into the industry’ benefits others, but it doesn’t. The delay only affects GTA fans and Take-Two investors—which I don’t care about.”

“How does GTA 6 help anyone but Rockstar?”

Sheffield questioned the recurring claim that GTA 6 could be the boost the industry needs, pointing out that Rockstar’s massive success doesn’t typically trickle down to benefit smaller developers.

“I don’t care if the industry makes $6 billion,” he said. “I care if there’s a greater variety of games being sold.”

An eternal game that dominates attention

According to Sheffield, GTA 6 risks becoming an “eternal game” like Fortnite, one that monopolizes attention and leaves little room for other titles.

“In my opinion, it does the opposite of helping the industry. It will become another forever-game that pulls focus from new releases. It’ll be one of the only games people play, pushing everything else out.”

He concluded his criticism with a blunt statement:

“As far as I’m concerned, delay it forever.”

When is GTA 6 coming out?

Despite the backlash, anticipation for Grand Theft Auto VI is sky-high. The second trailer shattered viewership records, becoming the most-watched video game trailer within 24 hours. Rockstar has confirmed a release date of May 26, 2026, exclusively for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S.
