Athletics will play three seasons in West Sacramento before completing move to Las Vegas
The Oakland Athletics’ days in Oakland are in their final contractural season, and they will need to make a pitstop on their way to Nevada.
The Oakland Athletics announced through a press release that the 2025 to 2027 MLB seasons will see them playing in the Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento while construction of their new stadium in Las Vegas is completed.
This park, which has a maximum capacity of 14,000 fans, is home to the Sacramento River Cats, a Triple-A team in the San Francisco Giants’ organization.
Since 2022, the River Cats have been the property of the Sacramento Kings and for that reason John Fisher, the owner of the Athletics, thanked the NBA team in the statement.
“We look forward to making Sutter Health Park our home as we move to Las Vegas,” the Athletics owner said. “We thank the Kings and the city of West Sacramento for hosting the Athletics while we complete our new park in Las Vegas.”
If the Las Vegas stadium is not completed within three years, the A’s would be able to extend their agreement to remain in Sacramento until 2028.
Where will the Athletics stadium be built in Las Vegas?
The Athletics management plans to build a building with capacity for 33,000 fans at the intersection of Tropicana Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard, land owned by Bally. The cost of the stadium will be $1.5 billion and the Nevada Legislature approved that taxpayers contribute $380 million.
Among the features of the stadium there is a giant screen that measures 18,000 square feet. The building will have five arches that will serve as a roof and will be similar to the design of the Sydney Opera House. Additionally, there will be 2,500 parking spaces.
