The Dominican outfielder Juan Soto and the New York Mets have agreed to a 15-year contract worth $765 million.

Juan Soto shone during his stint with the New York Yankees following the trade agreement with the San Diego Padres. However, his contract expired after the LA Dodgers clinched the World Series title, leaving Soto as a free agent and open to offers.

Soto solidified his reputation with stellar regular-season statistics, maintaining a .288/.419/.569 batting average, hitting 41 home runs, driving in 109 runs, and scoring 128 runs. In the postseason, he showcased his abilities further, posting a 1.160 OPS, hitting four home runs, and delivering a batting line of .429/.556/.857.

As a free agent, several teams expressed strong interest in acquiring the Dominican star. Among the contenders, along with the Mets, were the Toronto Blue Jays, Dodgers, Yankees, and, in recent days, the Boston Red Sox, though the latter ultimately fell out of the race.

Ohtani’s record-breaking contract

Shohei Ohtani set a historic precedent in December 2023 by signing a $700 million, 10-year deal with the Dodgers. However, that record has now been surpassed by Soto’s unprecedented $765 million deal over 15 years, setting a new benchmark in Major League Baseball.
