Update:

Robert Prevost, now Pope Leo XIV, has become the first pope from the United States in history. Clearly, the first question this called to the minds of Americans everywhere is about America’s favorite pastime: baseball.

Hailing from Chicago, Pope Leo XIV could potentially support either the Cubs or the White Sox, as both are from the city. The White Sox are from the South Side, where Prevost is from, but the Cubs are one of the most famous franchises in Major League Baseball and boast fans even outside the city.

Pope Leo XIV’s brother reveals his brother’s MLB team

According to his brother, John Prevost, Pope Leo XIV is a fan of the Chicago White Sox. He’s always remained loyal to the South Side.

Interestingly, his brother did mention that they grew up in a split household, but not between the Sox and the Cubs. Rather, their mother was a Cubs fan, and their father was a St. Louis Cardinals fan - neither was a fan of the White Sox, as Pope Leo XIV is.

There was some misunderstanding after initial reporting from ABC News said that the new pope is a Cubs fan. Reporter Terry Morgan said, “He’s tough, because it’s not easy to be a Cubs fan on the South Side of Chicago.”

John Prevost said he didn’t know where that came from. “He was never, ever a Cubs fan. So I don’t know where that came from. He was always a Sox fan,” he said.

Unfortunately, the Cubs got a little ahead of themselves, placing the message, “Hey Chicago, He’s a Cubs fan!” on their sign at Wrigley Field.

Of course, the White Sox fired back.

On their own turf at Rate Field, they wrote on their video board: “Hey Chicago, he’s a Sox fan!”
