Can the Pelicans get the better of the Spurs finally?
Come Wednesday the 9th placed New Orleans Pelicans will host the 10th placed San Antonio Spurs in an NBA Play-In Tournament game. The winner of course will get to face the loser of Tuesday’s clash between the Los Angeles Clippers and the Minnesota Timberwolves, with the winner of that game then finally claiming the 8th seed in the Western Conference and then in turn going on to face the Phoenix Suns in the first round of the NBA playoffs. It’s worth noting that the Pelicans have in fact been one of the best teams in the NBA when playing at home, with a 10-4-1 record, but on the other hand the Spurs have been just as good on the road with 19-12-1 be theirs.
On the other hand when it comes to the scenario between the two teams the Spurs are currently ahead on the season having played the Pelicans four times and emerged with a record of 3-1. It’s true that star Dejounte Murray has been absent for a few of their final games, but the Spurs are still the No. 2 ranking defensive team in the league, while the Pelicans in contrast are 16th. This one could be tight as the Pelicans will undoubtedly be looking to prove they can take the Spurs and even more so, with a shot at the 8th seed on the line.
The Spurs need to step up
Though they’ve lost each one of their last three games, the Spurs are still standing within touching difference of a spot in the NBA playoffs. In their last game they fell to the Dallas Mavericks 130-120, but they would have been encouraged by the stellar play of Murray - recently returned from illness - who posted 17 points to go with 7 assists, and 3 steals. Indeed, expect Murray to continue in that same vein now having had the opportunity to find some rhythm. As mentioned before San Antonio dominates the head to head and will likely come out with confidence, but that statistic could well act as a key motivator for the Pelicans and even more so with a playoff spot at stake.
