Update:

If you turned off Saturday night’s game early, assuming the Lakers were safely ahead, you missed more than just the final score. Luka Doncic’s 32-point, 10-rebound performance in Los Angeles’s commanding 123-100 win over the Denver Nuggets gave fans a reason to feel confident about their playoff chances. But Doncic himself isn’t ready to celebrate yet - not even close.

Doncic and LeBron James clicked offensively, providing reassurance to fans who’ve wanted to see it since the big move. And while excitement might be building in LA, Doncic quickly cooled expectations with a sharp reminder of the work still ahead.

It’s easy to overlook current possibilities when everyone talks endlessly about Doncic’s long-term fit with the Lakers. But the player himself isn’t interested in conversations about future seasons. For him, the Lakers' best opportunity might be staring everyone in the face, right now.

Doncic’s championship message to the NBA

Doncic rarely gives away too much in interviews. But after beating Denver - the very team that’s made recent playoff exits especially bitter – he allowed himself a slight hint of confidence. He clarified his thinking, acknowledging the team’s improvement, but emphasizing they’re still far from finished.

“Our goal is to win the championship,” Doncic told reporters. “That’s our only goal. And I think we have the team for that.”

In a league where athletes constantly hedge their bets or temper expectations, Doncic’s directness felt refreshing.
