Here is what WNBA Hall of Famer Rebecca Lobo said about Caitlin Clark being targeted
Much has been made of Caitlin Clark’s rough ride in her first season in the WNBA, but there is one for star of the league who believes it’s gone a little too far.
From her record-breaking final season in college to the record ratings that she’s garnered since being drafted at No. 1 overall, the former Iowa star has become a constant topic of conversation across the nation. Yet, one has to wonder has Caitlin Clark been treated unfairly since joining the professional game? Many fans believe that’s the case, but many former players are calling foul.
Rebecca Lobo doesn’t believe Caitlin Clark has been targeted
Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, Caitlin Clark is a big deal. Not only has Clark’s introduction to the WNBA sparked unprecedented viewership, but it’s also sparked national debate about her treatment at the hands of opponents. To that end, it would be fair to say that there are many who believe Clark has been unfairly targeted, while others believe it’s simply par for the course for any rookie. Yet, what’s interesting to note is that those views have largely been those of fans, not actual players.
This brings us to the comments of Hall of Fame center and ESPN analyst Rebecca Lobo. With the WNBA’s All-Star Game set for Saturday, July 21st, Lobo was speaking during a preparatory press conference on Wednesday and she made it clear that she’s not in agreement with the widespread take on Clark’s situation. “I don’t think it’s an actual, real narrative,” Lobo said. “I mean, it’s a narrative, but it’s a false one.”
Interestingly, Lobo didn’t stop there either as she went on to point out the often neglected truth of the matter: There have been many positive interactions between Clark and the league’s veterans as well, not just the kind that we witnessed when the Chicago Sky’s Chennedy Carter floored her during their first encounter earlier this season, something the former New York Liberty Star spoke directly to. “What everybody saw was the one foul from Chennedy Carter in that first matchup between Chicago and Indiana,” Lobo said. “I don’t think the veterans have been anything other than trying to stop Caitlin and trying to slow her down as competitors.” If one thing is clear, it’s that there are varying opinions on Clark’s maiden campaign but perhaps the question is whether all of them are valid.
