The NBA All-Star Game dates back to 1951, drawing together the league’s best players for a one-off clash. The format may be changed for this year’s edition but there’s a real weight of history behind it.

At the end of Sunday’s action one player will be crowned the NBA All-Star Game MVP and given the Kobe Bryant Most Valuable Player award. The award was named after Bryant in 2020, shortly after his tragic death in a helicopter crash.

It was a fitting tribute, given his incredible record in the game. Kobe Bryant was named All-Star MVP four times, the joint-most in league history. Only he and Bob Pettit received the award four times.

Kobe Bryant’s All-Star record

Bryant is a genuine NBA legend, a player who ranks among the very best in league history. He also starred from a young age in the All-Star Game and was named an All-Star 18 times, behind only LeBron James (21) and Kareem Adbul-Jabbar (19).

He was drafted by the LA Lakers straight out of high school, still only 17 at the time. Bryant had to wait until his 18th birthday to make his NBA debut but he was quickly drawing attention, partly for his All-Star exploits.

At the 1997 All-Star Weekend Kobe Bryant, still only 18, became the youngest winner of the Slam Dunk Contest. He followed that up with an impressive second-season performance, getting a place on the All-Star team in 1998. He was, and remains, the youngest player to start an All-Star Game in the NBA. It was in part because of those records that the NBA chose to rename the All-Star Game MVP award in his honour.

Kobe Bryant is synonymous with NBA All-Star and embodies the spirit of this global celebration of our game,” NBA commissioner Adam Silver said in announcing the decision. “He always relished the opportunity to compete with the best of the best and perform at the highest level for millions of fans around the world.”
