Update:

The 2024/25 NBA season didn’t go as Kyrie Irving had envisioned. After the Dallas Mavericks traded franchise cornerstone Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers in February, the team failed to reach the postseason. Injuries didn’t help either - least of all Irving’s own ACL tear in March, which ended his season early and is expected to delay his return for 2025/26.

Irving defends Knicks star KAT

But that hasn’t kept the 33-year-old guard out of the spotlight. Irving has remained active on Twitch during the NBA playoffs, and in a recent stream, he fired back at fans who’ve been trolling New York Knicks star Karl-Anthony Towns following the team’s Eastern Conference Finals loss to the Indiana Pacers.

Towns faced heavy criticism for his defensive struggles and inconsistent performances during the series. Irving didn’t hold back in his defense of the fellow New Jersey native - and made it clear he won’t tolerate any more slander.

Y’all gotta stop making fun of my brother KAT. I’m done with y’all,” Irving said. “It’s over for that, it’s a fucking wrap. I’m letting you know, if you repost that shit again or meme him up, I’m attacking you. Not like that physically, but I’m attacking you.”

Kyrie Irving and Towns’ New Jersey bond

Irving and Towns both grew up in New Jersey, and Kyrie made it clear his comments come as a result of a desire to protect one of his own.

“Y’all gotta leave KAT alone because y’all don’t know what it’s like to grow up in Jersey and be part of all these cultures. Trust me on that. Jersey is literally 130 miles long - it’s a very small state…but leave him alone,” he said.

“Because he’s Dominican, he’s Black, he grew up in a certain area in Jersey just like me - and you gotta survive out here. You got many different demographics of people, so you gotta survive out here. I don’t agree all the time when he be changing up his tone… but on a serious note, he is a man, he is my brother, and I protect him all the time.”
