NBA reviewing courtside fan incident after Jalen Brunson exchange in Finals opener
The New York Knicks’ win over the San Antonio Spurs in Game 1 ended with a bit of drama on the court as fans may have crossed a line heckling Jalen Brunson.

The New York Knicks’ Game 1 comeback win over the San Antonio Spurs didn’t end without drama, and now the NBA is taking a closer look at what happened in the final moments.
According to multiple reports, the league has opened an inquiry into an interaction between courtside fans and Knicks guard Jalen Brunson late in the fourth quarter of Wednesday night’s 105–95 Finals opener.
The situation unfolded as tensions rose in the closing seconds, with Brunson appearing to address game officials before continuing a brief exchange in the direction of nearby spectators. What may have seemed like a minor moment during the broadcast has since become a talking point heading into Game 2.
What happened between Brunson and fans in Game 1
Brunson, who finished with 30 points despite dealing with multiple in-game injuries, was seen speaking to an official as the clock wound down. Reports that followed indicated the conversation stemmed from comments directed at him from courtside seats.

The remarks were described as taunting in nature, reportedly referencing flopping during a tightly contested stretch of the game. The exchange did not escalate into a stoppage or ejection, but it drew enough attention for the league to review the incident after the game.
As of now, the NBA has not announced any disciplinary action, and the review is considered ongoing.

Fan-player interactions are typical, especially in high-stakes environments. But the Finals bring an even more heightened level of scrutiny. With a global audience and extra media attention, the league has historically taken a stricter approach to courtside conduct during the postseason. The expectation is that fans remain engaged without crossing into direct interference or persistent verbal targeting.
Apart from the drama and the interaction in the final moments, Brunson pushed through a physically demanding night that included an early knee knock and a later ankle issue, returning each time to guide New York through key possessions. Despite an inefficient shooting line overall, he delivered in the closing minutes, hitting a go-ahead three-pointer and a late jumper that helped seal the win. His fourth-quarter play, combined with New York’s defensive execution, turned a double-digit deficit into a statement road victory.
If any action is taken for the incident between Brunson and the fan, it would likely come quickly, given the short turnaround between Finals games. For now, the Knicks carry momentum into Game 2, and Brunson remains at the center of both the on-court narrative and the conversation surrounding it.
