Estados Unidos Update:

Just 11 minutes into the game, the play that likely changed everything unfolded. Bam Adebayo went down with an injury, leaving Miami stunned and convinced it was just terrible luck. But the replay told a different story — one that pointed directly at LaMelo Ball as the culprit behind the Heat star’s painful exit. The intent and aggression were hard to ignore; injuring “Bam Bam” looked far from accidental.

Despite the incident, the Charlotte guard wasn’t hit with any in‑game penalty. Ball kept playing as if nothing had happened and ultimately became a key factor in the Hornets’ win — a moment Adebayo never got the chance to experience. With the Heat eliminated and emotions running high, it was time for postgame reactions. And Erik Spoelstra, unsurprisingly, didn’t hold back.

Spoelstra addresses Adebayo injury

I didn’t see it, but I don’t think it’s funny. I don’t think it’s cute — it’s a stupid play. It’s dangerous. Obviously our best player is out, and I’m not making excuses. The Hornets played great and made those plays down the stretch. We had opportunities to win.”

Spoelstra didn’t stop there.

“It’s a shame, you know? He should be penalized for that. I don’t think he should’ve stayed in the game. Tripping, shenanigans... and Curtis (the referee) was right there. It was his responsibility to see it. And if it wasn’t his, then Zach should’ve seen it. Somebody had to see it. He took Bam out of the game, but it didn’t discourage us.”

And Spoelstra has a point. There was no reason whatsoever for Ball — from the floor — to reach out, grab, and pull the leg of a player who was coming down from a jump. The intent was obvious. Maybe not to injure, but certainly to try.

Charlotte punched its ticket to the second Play‑In game. But at what cost? The NBA needs to respond decisively to plays like this.
