Update:

Rick Barnes has, believe it or not, spent an entire decade with the University of Tennessee. In that time, he has taken the Vols to a number of Sweet Sixteen rounds and reached a career-high Elite Eight in 2024.

Such talent makes him a prized asset at the university, and he has been kindly remunerated for his services to the growth of the basketball side, who look like a solid team this season.

The coach has a storied career in college basketball, having started out in 1977 as an assistant for various teams before making the leap into management and taking on the role of head coach at George Mason a decade later. Since then he’s gone on to have a sensational career at NCAA level, and is showing no signs of slowing down, despite being 70 years of age.

What is Rick Barnes’ salary?

At present, Rick Barnes is earning a yearly salary of $5,800,000 with the University of Tennessee. In his current contract, the maximum amount of bonus money he can be paid may rise to a total of $3,000,000 and a buyout would cost $12,375,000.

His salary has steadily increased since his appointment in 2015, replacing Cuonzo Martin, when he signed a deal worth $2,250,000. He has seen his wage increase year on year to arrive at the number he currently earns.

While we don’t have the specific numbers on his bonuses this year, last season the veteran coach earned in the region of $800,000 after he took the side to the Elite Eight of the tournament in what was a stunning show of coaching and management.
