Update:

In the fierce and fast-moving world of college athletics in the modern age, it doesn’t take long before Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) opportunities come flying in for young talent. Take Indiana University quarterback Fernando Mendoza, for example.

Over the past season, the Hoosiers passer transformed himself into one of the most marketable athletes in all of collegiate sports.

Mendoza’s breakout campaign in 2025 was one for the history books: he finished the year as the recipient of the Heisman Trophy, becoming the first player from Indiana to claim college football’s most prestigious individual award. His on-field talent helped lift the Hoosiers to a 13-0 record, a Big Ten Championship, and a historic playoff seed.

Mendoza did not receive a traditional salary from Indiana University in the way professional athletes do. Instead, his income came from NIL partnerships and endorsements that allowed him to profit from his personal brand while still a student-athlete. Collectively, his deals were valued in the millions of dollars, reflecting how coveted top college players have become to sponsors.

According to multiple NIL tracking services, Mendoza’s portfolio was estimated at about $2.6 million in overall NIL value for the 2025-26 season, placing him among the top five highest-valued players in college football in terms of NIL earnings. Having said that, Yahoo quoted analysts who estimated Mendoza’s total net worth to be somewhere between $800k and $1.5 million.

A significant piece of that valuation came from a multi-year partnership with Adidas, but his commercial portfolio included collaborations with a range of recognisable sponsors such as Dr Pepper, T-Mobile, Keurig, Epic Games, and Royal Canin, among others. Each agreement contributed to the total valuation, although exact financial terms for individual deals are typically not disclosed publicly.

It is important to understand that the estimated $2.6 million did not come as a single lump sum. Instead, it reflects the total value of all deals over time, including projected payments for social media promotions, appearances, merchandise licensing, and other endorsements tied to Mendoza’s profile which will come over time.

The youngster’s NIL income simply dwarfed what most student-athletes earn, especially quarterbacks who have not yet reached the professional ranks. Winning major individual awards and helping Indiana to an undefeated regular season has put him at the top of the tree when it comes to what gets people excited in the modern era: money.
