A good time to buy: This is the reason why Super Bowl LIX tickets are cheaper now than last week

The Chiefs and Eagles will be playing out a rematch of the 2022 Super Bowl but the price of tickets has plummeted.

A seat at the Super Bowl is often billed as the hottest ticket in all of sports. This year’s Championship Game has added intrigue as the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles play out a rematch of the 2023 final.

The Chiefs go in search of a historic third consecutive title, with Patrick Mahomes closing in on genuine GOAT status. There’s a lot at stake for the Eagles, too, the beaten finalists who will be out for revenge this time around.

And yet, the demand for tickets for Super Bowl LIX appears to have dipped. On Tuesday Forbes reported that tickets on the 50-yard line are down about 60% on resale markets when compared to a week earlier. Has the market for Super Bowl tickets topped out, or is this just a temporary readjustment?

Of course, this being the Super Bowl all resale tickets are still extraordinarily high. The cheapest seats available on Gametime are currently at $4,627 and the most expensive at $23,693. Nevertheless, these prices have fallen substantially.

Those $4,627 tickets were at $6,492 last week, while the $23,693 option was recently changing hands for $56,409. This isn’t entirely unusual and Gametime predicts that Wednesday, February 5 could be the bottom of the market, with increases to come towards the end of the week.

Data from Ticketmaster shows that previous Super Bowls have seen resale tickets sold for between $4,000 and $6,000 on average. At time of writing, prices start at $3,495 on the Ticketmaster platform.

So what’s to blame for the drop-off? There are many factors affecting the market for Super Bowl tickets and much of it has little to do with the quality of football on show. The proximity of the two teams to the host city can make a big difference as a large number of travelling supporters can push up the price. Likewise, teams with big followings will push prices up if a Super Bowl appearance is seen as a rare, ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ event. For fans of the Chiefs, and the Eagles, that is not really the case.
