Trump will be at Super Bowl LIX and his presence promises to be a talking point
When the Chiefs face the Eagles this weekend, Donald Trump is set to become the first sitting U.S. president to attend the Super Bowl.
This year’s Super Bowl is expected to be the first to be attended by a sitting United States president, after it emerged on Tuesday that Donald Trump is planning to be in Louisiana for the 2024-25 NFL title game.
The Kansas City Chiefs, who are chasing an unprecedented third straight Vince Lombardi Trophy, take on the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX on Sunday, February 9.
New Orleans’ 73,000-capacity Caesars Superdome is to host the showpiece event for the eight time in the arena’s history.
Administration official confirms Trump to be at Super Bowl
Speaking to the Associated Press’s Michelle L. Price and Zeke Miller, an anonymous White House official has confirmed that Trump intends to be at the game.
AP also noted that the president is expected to hold a televized pre-Super Bowl interview with Fox News’ Bret Baier. It has become a tradition for the commander-in-chief to sit down with the Super Bowl broadcaster before the game.
According to Ian Casselberry of Yahoo Sports!, the Super Bowl is an occasion that has previously only attracted sitting vice-presidents.
Which vice-presidents have attended the Super Bowl?
In 1994, Al Gore was at Super Bowl XXVIII to see the Dallas Cowboys beat the Buffalo Bills in Atlanta; in 1982, George H.W. Bush attended Super Bowl XVI at Michigan’s Pontiac Silverdome, where the San Francisco 49ers defeated the Cincinnati Bengals; and in 1971, Spiro Agnew was in Miami to see the Baltimore Colts claim victory over the Cowboys in Super Bowl V.
Secret Service on red alert for Trump Super Bowl appearance
While security around the Super Bowl was already set to be tight, with the game coming just a month after the New Year’s Day truck attack in New Orleans, Trump’s presence will only serve to heighten vigilance in the city.
Per ABC, Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi said on Tuesday: “Secret Service has been on the ground for days, working in close collaboration with federal, state, and local law enforcement partners, as well as the NFL, to implement a comprehensive security plan.
“In the coming days, additional details will be provided regarding what fans can expect as they arrive and move through security checkpoints.”
What NFL team does Trump support?
CNN has reported that Trump’s favorite NFL franchise is the New England Patriots, a team that won six Super Bowls between 2001 and 2018.
The real estate magnate-turned-politician is even said to have considered buying the Patriots in the late 1980s, before current owner Robert Kraft took over the Massachusetts franchise.
Another NFL franchise that Trump could have ended up owning is the Buffalo Bills, the team beaten by the Chiefs in this year’s AFC Championship Game. The 78-year-old is reported to have offered $1 billion to buy the Bills in 2014, only for Terry and Kim Pegula to purchase the team for $1.4 billion.
