Bad news for Phillip Rivers after signing with the Indianapolis Colts
The Indianapolis Colts have signed Phillip Rivers to their practice squad after their starting QB Daniel Jones injury will sideline him for the season,

In a desperate move that was forced by the injury to their starting quarterback, Daniel Jones, the Indianapolis Colts have signed 44 year old Phillip Rivers to their practice squad. While this might give the Colts hope to make the playoffs, Rivers could be dealt with a dose of bad news concerning his Hall of Fame candidacy.
Rivers signs with Colt’s practice squad
The 44 year old has been signed to the practice squad and will most likely be on the active roster for the Colts for the rest of the season. It’s a miraculous comeback for the quarterback who became a grandfather this year, but it may come with a price.
Phillip Rivers, who retired in 2021, after finishing his long and illustrious career with the Indianapolis Colts was in the semifinal short list for the Hall of Fame, but if he is put on Indy’s active roster, which is more than likely, he is going to have to wait a little longer to get into the hallowed halls of Canton.
Per a spokesperson for the Pro Football Hall of Fame:

If Philip Rivers signs with the #Colts and takes a snap, his HOF eligibility would reset and he would need to be out for another five seasons for Hall of Fame eligibility.
Rivers is currently a semi-finalist for 2026.
According to the rules of the Hall of Fame, if Rivers is signed to the active roster, and if he takes a snap, then his potential induction to Canton would be reset and he would have to wait until 2031 to be up for induction again.
Complicated QB situation for Colts
At the moment, Rivers is only on the practice squad and would have to be promoted to the game day roster for his Hall of Fame candidacy to be reset. That is looking more and more likely considering the Colts quarterback situation at the moment.

Colts HC Shane Steichen just confirmed that QB Daniel Jones will miss the remainder of the season with a torn Achilles.

Daniel Jones suffered a torn achilles which will keep him out of the remaining weeks of the regular season and into the playoffs should the Colts make it that far. Their back up QB Anthony Richardson is still nursing a fractured orbital bone that he suffered in the Colts locker room in a freak accident and Riley Leonard is a rookie QB who played against Houston on Sunday but is battling a knee injury he suffered in the gam against the Texans.
Rivers had a career that should be worthy of a place in the Hall of Fame, making eight Pro Bowls, leading the league in passing yards in 2010, and leading the league in TD passes in 2008, but should he play this year, his Hall of Fame chances would come to an end, at least for this year. “If he’s signed to the practice squad, and that’s his status with the team (and thus still eligible for Hall) for an extended period to the point that we announce the final 15, and he then goes active, he’d come off, and we’d have 14,” said an NFL spokesman.
