While the jump from No. 12 to No. 11 wasn’t dramatic on paper, it was still enough to ensure Dallas landed their preferred defensive target, signaling just how highly the organization values Downs as they continue reshaping their defense under new coordinator Christian Parker.
Dallas sent two fifth-round picks to Miami in order to move up one spot and secure Downs before another team could intervene. It was a classic “preventive” trade rather than a dramatic leap up the board, reflecting confidence in their draft board and a willingness to pay a small premium to avoid losing a top defensive target.
Caleb Downs’ standout career at Ohio State
Downs enters the NFL with a reputation as one of the most complete defensive backs in college football. After beginning his collegiate career at Alabama before transferring to Ohio State, he quickly became a centerpiece of the Buckeyes’ defense.

At Ohio State, Downs consistently produced across multiple seasons. He had multiple 70+ tackle seasons in the Big Ten, impact plays in coverage, including interceptions and forced fumbles, and a 2025 campaign highlighted by strong production as a multi-role defensive back.
Across his college career, he developed a reputation for elite instincts, tackling reliability, and rare positional versatility. What separates Downs from most safeties is his usage. He’s not limited to deep coverage. He can rotate into the box, cover slot receivers, and function as a hybrid defender depending on the scheme.
Why Dallas targeted him
For the Cowboys, this pick fits both their immediate needs and their long-term vision.
Dallas has undergone defensive restructuring this offseason, including the hiring of Christian Parker as defensive coordinator, with a clear emphasis on modernizing coverage schemes and increasing disguise on the back end.
Downs is an ideal fit for that philosophy. He brings versatility across multiple secondary roles, high-level football intelligence and communication skills, strong tackling in space, and the ability to disguise coverage pre-snap and rotate post-snap. These days, those traits are increasingly valuable, especially for defenses trying to compete with elite passing attacks.
While the trade itself was minimal in cost, the expectations for Downs are not. The Cowboys are not drafting him as a developmental piece. They are drafting him as a potential Day 1 starter and a foundational defensive chess piece in Parker’s system.
