Who is Carnell Tate, Titans’ No. 4 overall pick in the NFL Draft?

The 2026 NFL Draft delivered its first major shock early on Thursday night, as the Tennessee Titans selected Ohio State wide receiver Carnell Tate with the No. 4 overall pick, well ahead of where many projections had him slotted.

A surprise rise into the top five

Tate entered the draft process widely projected as a mid-to-late first-round selection, with some evaluators even placing him outside the top five entirely.

In the end, the Titans made the aggressive move at No. 4, making Tate one of the highest-drafted wide receivers in recent memory and the first receiver off the board in 2026.

What Tate brings to Tennessee

A product of Ohio State, Tate developed into one of the most productive receivers in college football over his three seasons in Columbus.

Across his career with the Buckeyes, he posted over 1,800 receiving yards, 14 total touchdowns, and had a breakout 2025 season with 875 yards and 9 touchdowns. He was a key part of an Ohio State offense that consistently competed for national championships, including a title run during his time in college.

Tate is known for his polished route-running, strong hands in contested situations, and ability to operate both outside and in the slot. While not the most explosive deep threat in the class, he has been praised for his consistency and NFL-ready polish.

For Tennessee, the decision signals an aggressive shift toward giving their young offense immediate weapons. After last season’s struggles to consistently generate explosive plays through the air, the Titans opted not to wait on positional value or trade-down scenarios, going instead for what they believe is a “safe, high-floor” receiver who can contribute immediately.
