Following his arrest the Cowboys released wide receiver Atonio Callaway but who will replace him?

It appears the Cowboys have seen enough where the wide receiver is concerned. Indeed, the decision to release him was followed by one to replace him.

Dallas Cowboys terminan contrato con entrenadores; fue duro para Mike McCarthy

Following his arrest over the weekend, the Cowboys took the decision to release the wide receiver. Sadly, this is just the latest in a string of instances where the pass catcher has crossed legal lines, except now he remains without a team to play for.

Cowboys release Antonio Callaway after arrest

According to an official announcement from the team, the Dallas Cowboys released receiver Antonio Callaway on Monday following confirmation of his arrest in Miami over the weekend. Callaway was arrested on Saturday due to an outstanding warrant for driving with a suspended license, as indicated by reports. It is understood, that the 26-year-old was taken into custody after identifying himself to law enforcement when the vehicle was pulled over for speeding.

Antonio Callaway’s troubling past

Monday’s turn of events, is simply the latest in a growing list of questionable events that have occurred off the field during Callaway’s career in the NFL which began in 2018, when he was selected in the fourth round by the Cleveland Browns. Indeed, shortly after joining the team, Callaway was issued a citation for the possession of marijuana in addition to driving with a suspended license. There was also his suspension during the 2019 campaign for a violation of the NFL’s substance abuse police. Believe it or not, he was also suspended by the league in November of that same year for 10 games due to yet another substance abuse violation.

Following those two seasons in Cleveland, he would go on to play for the both the Miami Dolphins and the Kansas City Chiefs, before finally joining the Dallas Cowboys in November of 2022. Yet, to be perfectly honest we haven’t seen any of the veteran wideout in the last two seasons. Indeed, he didn’t play a single game for the Cowboys during this last season. Most recently, we saw him sign a futures contract in January, which seemed to signal things weren’t the best.

Tyron Johnson to replace Antonio Callaway

In a corresponding move, the Cowboys have now officially signed former Chargers receiver, Tyron Johnson, to replace Callaway. Originally a 2019 Texans UDFA, Johnson has been somewhat of a journeyman in the league, playing for the Bills, Panthers, Chargers, Jaguars, Raiders, Bengals and 49ers. Interestingly, the Texans reacquired Johnson on multiple occasions. Just last month, he was waived by the 49ers. The 27-year-old featured in four games last season between the Chargers and Texans. It’s worth noting that his more memorable contributions have actually come as a punt returner.
