The Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs clash today in the AFC Championship game, a modern classic showdown that many people believe will define this season’s NFL champions. With Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen leading their respective teams, there is little doubt about the quality that will be on show following the whistle. But what about the pomp and spectacle that comes before the action gets underway, and more specifically, who will be aiming to hit the high notes with the national anthem.

Who is singing the anthem at Arrowhead stadium?

As the 6:40 p.m. ET kickoff approaches this Sunday evening, Arrowhead Stadium will be electric. But before we enjoy the opening punt, there’s a moment designed to bring the crowd together. This year, the Chiefs have opted for a performer who knows this stage well.

If you’re going to be tuning in to catch the pre-game fun – and ready to stand to attention – you’ll see the usual NFL grandeur: a flyover by a B-2 Spirit bomber from Whiteman Air Force Base, the kind of precision military display that never fails to impress. But the true centerpiece of the pre-game ceremony lies in the hands – or, rather, the voice – of a veteran performer.

The national anthem here is always rather a special affair, steeped in Kansas City tradition. It’s a moment where fans, players, and staff take a collective breath, before the ferocity of the game begins. While some events focus on the more flashy innovations, this year’s choice for anthem singer hits a different mark.

At 6:35 p.m. ET, retired U.S. Navy Petty Officer First Class Generald Wilson will take center stage to deliver the national anthem. Wilson is no stranger to this role, with his deeply resonant voice having graced many Chiefs games in the past. It can even get a little moving for the audience.

What makes Generald Wilson the perfect pick?

Unlike the pop stars or chart-topping singers sometimes chosen for major sporting events – and, yes, we know there’s going to be at least one such sensation in the stands – Wilson brings something different. His background as a U.S. Navy Petty Officer gives his renditions a sense of authenticity and purpose. More than just entertainment, it’ll hopefully be a reminder of the shared values the anthem is meant to represent, despite some attempts to hijack it.

There’s no doubt that today’s game will deliver its share of drama, with Mahomes and Allen battling for a spot in Super Bowl LIX. But before that intensity begins, the focus will shift to Generald Wilson. And we’ll be there to bring you it all live.
