Rob Gronkowski retired in 2022 with career stats that make impressive reading - in 143 games over 11 seasons, he racked up 621 receptions, 9,286 yards and 93 touchdowns - plus he also won four Super Bowl rings (XLIX, LI, LIII and LV).

How Belichick helped Rob Gronkowski

Gronk’s regarded as one of the best tight ends of all-time - some say he is the greatest. But he had to work hard at his game and fine-tune his technique as his old coach Bill Belichick revealed this week.

Belichick explained how he taught Gronk to run like Travis Kelce, by showing him the Chiefs' TE’s showreel. As he demonstrated on Inside the NFL with a running commentary to highlight both players' characteristics.

How changing pace helped Gronk

“He makes the play. And now he uses his quickness. And he’s able to break tackles with his lower body here - when he’s under control. Steps through a tackle, steps through another tackle, not a very good one... And really should score, this is just a bad stiff arm, he puts it out too early.

“But after the catch, getting him on the ground is not the easiest thing in the world. But by slowing down and being under control and anticipating that these DBs are gonna go low on him, that’s the way to avoid those tackles.

“So, I talked to Rob about this. Rob eventually became a much better runner with the ball in his hands by slowing down and getting it under control. Here’s a play, coincidentally against the Chiefs, where Rob takes a little checkdown round here. And now he’s one-on-one with the safety. Instead of just running to the goalline and getting chopped down by the free safety here, Rob slows up, stiff arms him and is able to continue into the run.

“Now, picks out another guy - next tackler, and drops the shoulder for a few extra yards,” Belichick explained. “The way Kelce ran with the ball after the catch put it in my mind: ‘This is what Rob should be doing’. 100 percent”.
