Jared Goff wants long-term stay with Detroit Lions: when is he a free agent?
Despite the Lions’ NFC Championship Game collapse against the 49ers, which cost them their first Super Bowl, quarterback Goff plans to stick around.
The Detroit Lions’ dream of playing in a Super Bowl for the first time ever was ended in dramatic fashion when they were beaten in Sunday’s NFC Championship Game by the San Francisco 49ers in dramatic fashion. 24-7 ahead at halftime, Dan Campbell’s team were on the receiving end of a historic comeback, losing 27 consecutive points in the third and fourth quarters.

But despite their playoffs failure, quarterback Jared Goff has his heart set on staying with the Lions long term. The 29-year-old was traded to Detroit by the Los Angeles Rams in January 2021 in exchange for Matthew Stafford, as well as first-round draft picks in 2022 and 2023, and a third-round pick in 2021.
The eight-year veteran will become a free agent at the end of the 2024 season but would like to stay with his current team for the rest of his career, although he knows his future lies in the hands of the Lions management.
What did Goff say about his Lions future?
“I love this place. I have loved every second of my time here and would love more,” Goff said in an interview with MLive.com. “I love Dan (Campbell), love all the coaches, love all my teammates. It’s out of my hands in some ways. It’s up to my representatives and obviously the people upstairs. Yeh, it would be great, but it’s not up to me.”
In the 2023 regular season, the Lions won their NFC division for the first time in 30 years. Goff played a crucial role in that achievement, completing 67.3% of his passes for 4,575 yards, 30 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
According to Spotrac, a website that tracks the wages of sports stars around the globe, Goff will earn a base salary of $21.65 million in the 2024 season, along with a $5 million roster bonus and a further $5 million for restructuring his contract. He has a cap hit of $31.65 million.
