Update:

The NFL Draft is a life-changing night for football prospects, but it’s also become one of the most unique fashion showcases in sports.

What started decades ago as fairly standard, sometimes questionable suit choices has evolved into something much more intentional. Today’s prospects aren’t just dressing to impress. They’re telling stories.

And often, the most meaningful details aren’t even visible at first glance.

The hidden messages inside NFL draft night suits

One of the defining trends of modern draft fashion is what players choose to sew or print inside their jackets. Custom linings have become a way for prospects to honor family, represent their journey, or highlight personal milestones.

Examples include family photo collages stitched into the interior, symbols of hometown pride or cultural heritage, personal mottos or messages hidden beneath the surface, and college logos or mascots as a nod to where it all started.

The evolution didn’t happen overnight. Back in 1989, Deion Sanders helped redefine draft night style by leaning into flash and personality, setting the tone for future generations.

In the years that followed, the event gradually shifted:

  • 1990s–early 2000s: Traditional, often conservative suits
  • 2010s: Bolder colors, patterns, and risk-taking
  • Late 2010s–present: Fully customized, designer-driven looks with personal meaning

Today, the draft functions almost like the Oscars of sports, with players sometimes even receiving major brand deals to wear specific suits on the red carpet.

NFL Draft 2026: The fashion show

With the 2026 draft taking place in Pittsburgh, attention isn’t just on picks, but also their presentation. Here are some of the looks from the players in attendance for Round 1.

Colton Hood, DB, Tennessee Volunteers

Hood decided to put a photo collage of his family and friends - his biggest supporters - on the inside of his blue draft suit.

Kayden McDonald, DT, Ohio State Buckeyes

McDonald boasted some bling, but also stitched a message on the inside of his suit.

Sonny Styles, LB, Ohio State Buckeyes

Styles included a photo collage of his family on the inside of his suit, along with a poem.

Arvell Reese, LB, Ohio State Buckeyes

Reese has partnered with Reese’s and showed off the popular candy with stitching on the inside of his suit.

Carnell Tate, WR, Ohio State Buckeyes

Tate chose to honor his mother and sister by stitching their names on the inside of his jacket.

Caleb Downs, DB, Ohio State Buckeyes

Downs came to the draft with matching suits with his family, with a photo collage on the inside of each of theirs.

Jeremiyah Love, RB, Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Love had a family collage on one side of the inside of his jacket, but on the other, he had art. Love partnered with Sharpie, who helped bring the image to art, inspired by Love’s love for anime.

The suit isn’t just about looking sharp when they walk across the stage. It’s about representing where they came from, who helped them get there, and what they carry with them into the next chapter. And sometimes, the most important part of that story is hidden on the inside.
