The Hall of Famer and Cowboys legend that could be the next head coach: “Any franchise would be lucky to have him”
Deion Sanders has been heavily linked with a move to Dallas.
Mike McCarthy’s time at the head of the Dallas Cowboys is over, and the Texas side are now on the hunt for a new head coach. Recently, the name Deion Sanders has been closely linked to the job, with one Hall of Famer claiming that he would be the ideal fit for the role.
Currently, Sanders runs the Colorado Buffaloes football program. When asked about the vacancy, Sanders said it was an “intriguing” idea but he was fully committed to the role he currently has. “To hear from Jerry Jones is truly delightful, and it’s intriguing,” Sanders said Monday. “I love Jerry and believe in Jerry. After you hang up, and process it, and think about it, it’s intriguing. But I love Boulder and everything there is about our team, the coaches, our student body and the community.”
That’s not the message that came from NFL Hall of Famer Champ Bailey, who told USA today that “any franchise would be lucky to have him. I hope he gets a legitimate shot. Dallas would’ve been the last place I thought he’d go, but I’m happy to hear that there’s some mutual interest there. He’s ready for it.”
‘Anybody who gets him would be lucky to have him’
“He’s a pro’s pro,” Bailey added. “He’s a coach and his experience in the game of football and leadership, I mean he can stand up against anybody. Anybody who gets him would be lucky to have him. He’s a winner. He turned Colorado’s program around,” Bailey said. “I expect him to do the same in the league if he gets a shot.”
Sanders is a legend for fans of the Cowboys, having featured heavily for them across five seasons from 1995 to 1999. During his time as a Dallas player, he won Super Bowl XXX in 1995, made the Pro Bowl four times and was a first-team All-Pro three times.
Cowboys defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer had his say on the matter back in November, and made it clear that he thought Sanders would not leave the Buffaloes for a role in Dallas. “Deion and I are obviously really good friends, and we talk weekly probably, but I’m not going to speculate on any jobs or anything like that because I don’t think that’s right. I know that he’s told me many times that he’s really happy at Colorado. He likes it there. Obviously, they’ve done a great job. Trying to watch his games each and every week that I can to give him some tidbits and go from there.”
As a coach, Sanders has five seasons under his belt:
