Why Brock Purdy’s contract extension may be worth less than you’d think
The 25-year-old is finally due an improvement on his San Francisco 49ers salary but his teammates may prevent him from earning top dollar.

It’s been three years since the San Francisco 49ers selected Brock Purdy with the 262nd and final pick of the 2022 NFL Draft. It’s fair to say that ‘Mr Irrelevant’ has exceeded expectations since then, going on to establish himself as one of the league’s premier quarterbacks and leading the 49ers to the Super Bowl last year.
Purdy is still on the same $934,252 annual salary that he was handed when he joined the team but now, after three years with San Francisco, he is eligible for an increase.
As soon as the 49ers' season came to a close earlier this month, focus in SF turned to the deal that Purdy could demand upon re-signing. His 2023 season was record-breaking and he looks set to be a centrepiece for the franchise for years to come, however he is unlikely to receive the sort of league-leading deal that some others in his position have commanded.
“If there’s an opportunity to be able to get that done quick, that’d be great,” Purdy said recently, when asked about his hopes for the new deal. “Just so we can get back for phase one, get after it with the receivers and our team and just continue to grow.”
How much could Brock Purdy receive in new 49ers salary?
There have been no confirmed reports about the nature of Purdy’s salary going forward but its far to assume that he won’t quite be at the level of Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott, who put pen to paper on a $60 million per year deal last September.
Purdy has been a key piece for the 49ers in recent years but his good performances have been aided by an incredible supporting cast. The likes of running back Christian McCaffrey, tight end George Kille and receivers Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel are bona fide stars in their respective positions, and won’t be cheap.
The NFL’s salary cap ensures that teams can’t maintain a squad full of high-earners for long, meaning that Purdy may have to give up some potential salary to ensure that the 49ers aren’t forced to part with key members of the team. For his part, Purdy seems very happy to take one for the team during salary negotiations.
“I want to win for this organization and everybody here, and I’m not the kind of guy that wants to have any kind of drama associated with anything,” Purdy said. “Obviously, I want to help the team across the board with all the other guys who need to get their deals done but everybody will handle it the right way and how they need to. Like I said, it’s a business, but everybody has their turn and their part with all of it.”
