David Benavidez crowned new WBC light heavyweight champion after Dmitry Bivol vacates the title
Bivol prioritized a trilogy fight against Artur Beterbiev instead of facing Benavidez. The decision led to Bivol vacating the WBC title.

David Benavidez has officially become the WBC light heavyweight world champion after Dmitry Bivol unexpectedly vacated the 175-pound title. The announcement was made by Mauricio Sulaimán, president of the World Boxing Council.
Bivol decision shocks boxing world
Sulaimán referred to Dmitry Bivol’s reasoning for vacating the light heavyweight title without stepping into the ring as “ridiculous.” The decision to relinquish the belt has certainly stirred conversations in the boxing world.
“I have just received a cold and impersonal notification from Dmitry Bivol lawyer, Patrick English, with arguments that are so ridiculous that I rather not discuss informing the WBC that Dmitry Bivol has decided to relinquish his WBC light heavyweight championship. We wish Bivol success and hereby confirm David Benavidez as WBC world light heavyweight champion,” Mauricio Sulaimán revealed in a social media post.

Bivol lines up trilogy fight against Beterbiev
However, there is another perspective on Bivol’s decision to vacate the title. It appears he prioritized a trilogy fight against fellow Russian Artur Beterbiev.
In their first encounter, Beterbiev emerged victorious, but in the rematch, Bivol claimed revenge and became the Undisputed World Champion at 175 pounds.

The WBC had designated Benavidez, the interim champion of the division, as the mandatory challenger. Following the announcement of his elevation to full champion, the Mexican-American fighter took to social media to share his reaction. He posted a photo proudly holding the belt that officially recognizes him as the WBC light heavyweight world champion.
“I just received the news that Bivol decided to vacate his title rather than fight me. This now makes me the WBC light heavyweight world champion. This isn’t the ideal way for me to become a world champion, but now that I am, I intend to deliver the best fights possible,” he shared on X.
